GPS Location Tracking

Attendance tracking is a feature that can be used for most aspects of Platinum's software.  Checking in or out of tests, labs, opportunities, and classes.  Students can use the app or the browser on their mobile devices to check in and out.  Their check-in will grab their GPS location from their device when the students activate the location tracking setting in their device and agree to allow their device to be tracked.

A. How Attendance Tracking Works

Check-in / Check-out coordinates are captured by the device's location services.  The accuracy of the location information is limited by the device’s accuracy at that point in time. Even good assistance GPS can be off by quite a bit depending on the quality of the signals it is getting at that exact moment.

Note: GPS tracking only works with mobile devices as most computers do not have GPS tracking.

A lookup will be triggered based on the School Clinical Sites address if the user is looking under Manage Attendance. If the address is incorrect, that lookup can cause it to show the student a few blocks away. Unfortunately, even if the admin corrects the address, it will not retroactively fix that student's check-in due to the integrity of other users checking in.

B.  Troubleshooting if the Location is not Capturing Correctly

There are a few reasons that a student's location could be captured further away from where they checked in/out. The location depends on the accuracy of the coordinates pulled from the device, not our software.

Troubleshooting:

  • Verify that location tracking is turned on for the Platinum App in your settings.
  • Turn off Power saving mode.
  • Check the device's settings for precision accuracy in the location settings.  If available, turn it on.
  • Check the signal the device is getting. Try connecting to Wi-Fi if the signal strength is low.
