(Instructor) Adding Instructor Created Questions to a Test

Instructors can create their own custom questions, which can be used on exams or in their students' computer-adaptive tests. This article explains how to incorporate your questions into a test after they have already been entered into the program.

Info: If you need to enter your questions into EMSTesting, please refer to our articles on adding your own questions to the school by clicking here.

Adding Instructor made Questions to an Exam:

1. Login to EMSTesting and select your Instructor role.

2. Click on the Manage Test link in your red toolbar.

This will bring you to your Test Search page, where you can manage your existing tests or create a new test.

3. Click the Create New Test button to create a new test. Alternatively, if you are editing an existing draft, click the edit test button to the right of the test name and title.

  •  New Test: If you are creating a new test, you will be taken to the Test Settings tab for your new test. You will need to fill out the required fields, just as you would when creating a test composed of our Platinum Validated Questions. Once you have entered your settings, you will click Create, which will cause the Question Criteria tab to appear.
  • Existing Exam: If you add questions to an existing test, you will not need to re-enter the test settings. You will just need to click the Question Criteria tab.

Note: The provider level of your test must match the provider level that you have assigned to your questions to be able to pull them on to your test.

4. 4 On the Question Criteria tab, you will see your options for pulling questions into a test. Depending on how you set up your questions, you may find one route easier than the others.

Ways to pull questions onto your exam:

A.  Pull Questions By Curriculum.

B. Pull From My Active Tests.

C.  Pull Questions By Test, Keyword, or ID.

A.  Pull Questions By Curriculum

  • Change the Question Bank drop-down to the appropriate option. If you have added your questions correctly, there will be two additional options.
    • My Questions will contain the questions added to your instructor account.
    • My Schools Questions will contain questions added to the program by the active instructors in your school. This option allows you to share questions with the other instructors in your school.
  • Once you have selected your Question Bank and your Curriculum, the numbers to the left of the modules will indicate how many active questions you have cross-referenced to that module.
    • Note: If these numbers do not match the number of questions you have added, there may be an issue with your question's settings, preventing them from being eligible to be added to a test.
  • Once you are satisfied with your selections, you will click the Save Criteria button, and the program will pull the questions onto the Test Questions tab. 12:23 5-curr.png

B.  Pull From My Active Tests:

If you have other tests that already contain your questions, you can still use Pull From My Active Tests.  You will just set the number of questions you are looking for, select the test that contains your questions, and click Save Criteria to pull the questions onto your new test.

Note: For this option, your original test becomes the bank of potential questions. Therefore, if your previous test contains both our questions and your own, both will be included on the new test.

 C.  Pull Questions By Text, Keyword or ID:

  • Select the appropriate option from the Question Bank drop-down. If you have added your questions correctly, there will be two additional options.
    • My Questions will contain the questions added to your instructor account.
    • My Schools Questions will include questions added to the program by the active instructors in your school. This option allows you to share questions with the other instructors in your school. If you search by text, you can then pull from your or your school's bank of questions that contain a specific word or short phrase.
  • Keyword: You can only search by keyword if you have assigned keywords to your questions.

  • ID: If you gave your questions individualized question IDs you can use those IDs to pull a specific question from a test.

Note: If you have trouble finding the questions you created when searching, double-check the spelling and ensure there are no spaces before or after your search phrase. If this does not help, refer to the link at the top of this article to make sure all the required info is added to your questions.
