(Instructors) Assigning an Individual Retest, Allowing Retakes in the Test Settings, Toggling the Retake Score in the Grade Book

There are 2 different retake options: an individual retest, where the student has taken the exam and the instructor would like to allow the student a second opportunity to take it. And Allowing Retakes in the test settings, which allows students to retake an exam up to a set amount. After an individual retake, the score shown in the grade book will automatically be updated to reflect the new retake score, and the Retakes Allowed score will be shown as the highest score obtained of all attempts. It is possible to toggle which grade is used in the grade book to reflect a previous test.

A.  Assigning an Individual Retest

B. Allowing Retakes in the Test Settings (multiple retakes allowed)

C. Toggling the Retake Score in the Grade Book

A. Assigning an Individual Retest:

New Attempt: If the student has completed the test and you wish to offer another attempt, you can grant them a retest.

Missed Exam: If the student has missed the test or did not complete it, you can edit your test's settings to allow the student to gain access to the test again. However, they cannot 'retake' the exam as they have not completed it or taken it for the first time.

Instructions on how to do this can be found here.

1.  Login to your Instructor role.

2. From your Instructor Homepage, you will click on your class and then select the View Grade Book button.

3. Scroll over until you find the name of the test for which you wish to administer the retest. Once found, click the test name, which will bring you to the Class Test Results Page.

4. Scroll down to the Individual Student Results section and locate the student(s) that is being granted a retest.

5. Click on the checkbox next to the student's name (or you can select the box next to the Student's Name to select all students).

6. Once you have selected, click the Retake Tests button.

7. A popup window will appear, you can either Cancel or select the Continue button to confirm your action.

  • By clicking continue, you will give them a clean slate for this test and allow the students to restart it from the beginning. The number that appears in yellow is the number of retests the student has received on this test.
  • It is important to know that the test is archived. This means that you can find the test again. You will also see an option to Export Answers in the same section. Once you have exported the answers, you can see the answers for the first attempt. You can switch the score recorded in the grade book by clicking the retest number, then selecting the score you want to replace the most recent attempt with (See section C).

8. Reopen the exam. If the test has already closed, you must edit your test's settings to allow students access to the test. Extend the end date of the exam. If there are students who missed the original exam, please do not hesitate to add a password and provide the password to the students allowed to access the exam.

B. Allowing Retakes in the Test Settings (multiple retakes allowed)

Instructors can set a specific number of retakes allowed within the test's settings.  This will allow students to retake the exam that number of times without the instructor assigning the retake for each student each time. All other settings will reset for the exam for each attempt.  Such as the timer, Start/Resume Limit, and Randomizing the question order will all start over for each retake of the exam. The score recorded in the grade book by default will be the highest score the student obtains through all the retakes.  If you would like to reset the score, you can do so by clicking the retest button on the test results page (See section C).

Note: Automatic retakes are only permitted on Quizzes.  The test type of the exam must be Quiz.

Considerations: Student Test Results Detail Level

You may want to select the option to Allow Students to View Results Immediately. That will allow your students to see their scores after each attempt. However, selecting level 4 reporting Question/Answer/Annotation Review will show the students the questions and answers to the questions within the exam, which may not be ideal when utilizing this feature.

Platinum Recommends: Levels 1, 2, or 3 Reporting with Show Student Student Results Immediately, but not to use Level 4.
