SMC 23 clinical skills can be documented in a simulated setting. If you have students who are documenting a simulation but are unable to add a certain skill, there are a couple of things to check for.
A. Checking if the Skill is in both the Course and Class
B. Check to see if Simulations Allowed
C. Check to see if the Student has Reached the Max
D. Ensure that the Student is trying to Add the Correct Exposure type
A. Checking if the Skill is in both the Course and Class
1. Edit your course either from the main dashboard or through your Admin role.
2. Click the Platinum Planner tab.
3. Click the Skill Requirements tab. These are all the skills added to your course.
4. Verify the skill your student is looking for is added to the course. Select the Clinical tab and locate the skill. If you do not see the skill, follow the sub-steps. If you do see the skill, go to step 5.
- If you do not see the skill desired, change the display toggle to Inactive. This will show you skills not added to your course. If you see the skill you want to add, click the checkbox, then Save at the bottom. When you checkbox it, it will disappear as you have made it active. Once added to your course, add it to the clinical class, so your students can document it.
- If after changing your display toggle to Inactive, the skill desired is not an option, you will have to create a custom skill. Click here to learn more about how to create a custom skill.
5. Select the Classes tab.
6. Edit the clinical class associated with the student's opportunity.
7. Select the Skill Requirements tab. These are all the skills added to the class.
8. Verify the skill your student is looking for is added to the class.
- If you do not see the skill, change the display to Inactive and add the skill to the class by check boxing. Save at the bottom. When you checkbox it, it will disappear as you have made it Active.
B. Check to see if Simulations Allowed
Follow the directions above to check your skills. Ensure there is a value in the Sims Allowed column for the course and class Skill Requirement settings. If the box is empty, the students cannot document it in a simulation. Add an integer to allow students to document.
- 0: Setting your sim allowed number to zero will allow students to document a simulated skill attempt but will not count it toward their overall progress.
- 1-99: Allow students to document the number of skill attempts and count toward their skill progress.
C. Check to see if the Student has Reached the Max.
1. In either your Instructor role or Admin role, select the Reports option in the red toolbar.
2. Run a Progress Report for the student.
3. Locate the skill the student is trying to document. If the student is at 100% for that skill they may have reached the max number of times the skill is permitted to be documented. Follow the steps above to check the course and class settings. You can increase the Max in both the course and class if desired.
D. Ensure that the Student is trying to Add the Correct Exposure type.
Depending on your course settings, not all skill versions can be documented in a simulation. If you have checked all the above issues, it could be that the student is selecting the incorrect exposure type for that skill. Have the student ensure that they have selected the correct exposure in their opportunity documentation.
